Brava Energia, one of Brazil's leading private energy producers, faced the daunting task of connecting offshore production assets more than 120 miles from the coast. Fiber deployment was unfeasible, while satellite alternatives—both geostationary and newer LEO constellations—failed to meet the company's needs for latency, reliability, and guaranteed bandwidth. To solve this challenge, Brava turned to Ceragon, ultimately setti world record with a 126-mile (~202 km) offshore wireless link.

THE CHALLENGES

Operating offshore oil and gas assets demands a reliable, high-bandwidth network. For Brava Energia, establishing connectivity to platforms over 120 miles from shore posed unique challenges:

  • Extreme Distance: The offshore link stretched 126 miles (~202 km), far exceeding conventional wireless range.
  • Satellite Limitations: Both GEO and LEO satellite options delivered high latency, limited bandwidth, and inconsistent service quality.
  • Fiber Not Feasible: Deploying subsea fiber would have been prohibitively expensive and time-consuming.
  • Demanding Operational Needs: Brava required low-latency, carrier-grade performance to support SCADA systems, surveillance, and future IoT and private LTE networks.

THE SOLUTION

Ceragon designed and deployed a pioneering solution using the IP-20N platform with IRFU-D HP radios operating in the 6 GHz frequency band. This configuration delivered unmatched performance over the extreme offshore distance:

THE RESULTS

By leveraging the IP-20N and IRFU-D HP 6 GHz platform, Ceragon ensured carrier-grade performance and stability across the world's longest offshore wireless link. The project delivered transformational outcomes for Brava Energia:

  • Control centers
  • Replaced underperforming satellite services with guaranteed bandwidth and ultra-low latency
  • Strengthened operational safety through dependable monitoring and data transferStrengthened operational safety through dependable monitoring and data transfer
  • Built a foundation for future LTE and IoT deployments across Brava's onshore and offshore assets

WHAT'S NEXT

Brava Energia now has a record-breaking offshore network backbone that proves what's possible when innovation meets execution. Building on this success, Ceragon and Brava are currently exploring new opportunities, from managed services to private LTE coverage for onshore energy operations.
