INSTILLATION

The Inner Harbor of Baltimore has long been a draw for both tourists and local citizens. With shops, restaurants, and ferries, this locale is a major attraction. In an effort to support this vibrant area, the City of Baltimore launched a project to bring free public Wi-Fi to the Inner Harbor.

The City of Baltimore approached Port Networks, a local systems integrator, to deploy a Wi-Fi network that would provide both tourists and locals with easy access to the Internet. Included in this network was the need for backhaul for the Wi-Fi access points.

Installing EtherHaul was very easy. Its small size and light weight made the physical installation dead simple, and aligning the link was surprisingly uncomplicated and fast.

THE CHALLENGES

Siklu by Ceragon EtherhaulTM | 60 GHz mmW radios | Gigabit throughput

Port Networks quickly settled on mmWave as the optimal spectrum for the backhaul connectivity that could provide the capacity needed. The search for a mmWave radio that would be visually unobtrusive led to the Siklu by Ceragon EtherHaul, which would provide gigabit throughput that could handle peak Wi-Fi performance requirements.

Port Networks installed the entire Wi-Fi network, including the backhaul, themselves.

The EtherHaul is literally palm-sized; it was the smallest radio we could find that operated in the 60 GHz spectrum. Adding Siklu radios will allow us to easily boost our network capacity.

THE RESULTS

Easy installation | Unobtrusive deployment | Flawless peak performance

The network performance has been flawless since installation. The EtherHaul backhaul will be able to handle anything Baltimore’s network demands. The solution has delivered proven performance under peak Wi-Fi conditions, even when the upload rate has greatly exceeded the download rate.

Port Networks is very pleased with the solution’s performance and is planning to incorporate additional Siklu by Ceragon radios in future projects.

ABOUT PORT NETWORKS

We’re a different kind of Internet service provider. Unlike the big cable and phone companies that had to adapt their systems to carry Internet traffic, we built our network to do one thing: move data to and from our customers as quickly and reliably as possible. Our engineers make use of the best fiber, microwave, and Wi-Fi equipment available to deliver both high performance and dependability, without the compromises involved in using a system designed for something else.
